Barnet has signed former Ajax, Juventus, and Barcelona midfielder Edgar Davids as a player/coach to help the club improve its League Two campaign. The 39-year-old Dutchman joins the team currently propping up the Football League and could make his debut within a fortnight. Davids, who has been out of professional football since a brief stint playing for Crystal Palace in 2010, has been in charge of Sunday league team Brixton United and has kept fit by playing street soccer. He spoke to the media after joining up with the squad for training, saying he wants to help English football develop young talent. Davids will be joint head coach alongside incumbent Mark Robson in an equal partnership. The news of Davids' appointment was broken by the player himself on Twitter, saying he was happy to join his local football club Barnet FC as a player/coach. Barnet survived on the last day of last season and has continued to struggle, leading the hierarchy to turn to Davids. The capture of Davids is a statement of intent by the club to improve results and lay further foundations for the future, according to director of football Paul Fairclough. Davids won the Champions League, Uefa Cup, three Serie A titles, and three Dutch Eredivisie titles in his glittering career. He first retired from football when his second stint at Ajax ended in 2008. Davids' appointment has been met with speculation that he will eventually replace Robson, but this was dismissed by both the Dutchman and Fairclough. The club did not break the bank to sign Davids, according to Fairclough. Davids' experience and expertise will be a great example to all the young players at Barnet, said Fairclough. The club's fans will be hoping that Davids can bring some much-needed success to the team, which has struggled to win games this season. With Davids on board, Barnet will be looking to turn their season around and start climbing the League Two table.
